Morton Barlaz
Spring 98 "My grade in the class was C.
Even though Dr. Barlaz seems to be extremely knowledgable on the subject of wastewater treatment, the class (CE574) is titled "Chemistry and Microbiology for Engineers I". From this title and the course description in the course catalog:
"Fundamental aspects of inorganic chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology presented and related to problems of surface and groundwater pollution, refuse decomposition and water and wastewater treatment. Buffering, alkalinity, solubility, oxidation reduction, microbial diversity and ecology, and energy conservation and growth requirements in bacteria".

William L. Bingham
CE 213
Introduction to Mechanics
"Bingham is a very arrogant and condesending professor. His attitude towards students in one that does not promote a good learning environment."
Fall 97 CE 325 - "Dr Bingham is an excellent professor. His tests are fair and predictable, as they reflect, almost exactly, the homework assignments. I believe that most of the people that don't care for him are the ones that don't have a firm grasp of basic statics and, as a result, got poor grades in his class. Simply stated, just do the work and you'll be fine. "
Fall97 "A hard a.. in class (statics, solids), but will give you all the help you need in a 1‚on‚1 session. He really cares, a rarity in today's academic world"
Spring99 CE426 "My grade in the class was A+.
"This was a great course. Basically an overview of steel members in tension, compression, flexure, combined comp/flex, and the various means of connecting them via bolts and welds. Dr. Bingham grades fairly and bases tests directly on the homework. Any reasonble effort by a competent student should merit at least a B."

Dr. Chao
CE327
Fall97 "terrible teacher, but affraid to fail anyone so he grades his finals and projects very easily"
My grade in the class was A.
fall97 - CE214 "He grades fairly, but without partial credit, , and is willing to go over hard concepts repeatedly. His accent his a bit hard to understand. He curved the tests, and has this policy about dropping a test if you did bad on it. I thought the class was educational and that He is a good professor. Manages to tell a joke every now and agian."

Dr. Frey
CE576
"Class : CE 576, I took the class in Fall 1997. I give this teacher a 4 out of 4, my grade in the class was A.
Dr. Frey is an excellant instructor, but he expects one to work. he tells you what he wants, and how he wants it. he uses real world situations and data. Up to the minute stuff. this guy is worth every penny."

Fall97 "Do not take this teacher if you want to get and kind of a good grade in Statics or Dynamics. He is a horrible teacher. Not sure if he knows the subject matter himself. 2/3 of his class was failing before the final. Did not give curve. Not sure how many passed."

John M. Hanson
CE 327
Reinforced Concrete Design
Dr. Hanson has got to be one, if not the worst teacher in the department. It is clear that he has a full command of the subject matter, however the ability to get that information across to anyone besides his peers is deeply kacking. I would advise anyone who has to take this class to put it off until someone else is teaching it. That goes even if you have to go over the summer, or stay an extra year!!!
Spring99 "My grade in the class was B+.
"Dr Hanson is a very friendly and thoughtful person. He always has a kind word when you see him in class, in his office, or even in the hallway. He is also the only Distinguished Professor in the NCSU CE Department. This course is probably the most difficult mechanics course in undergrad CE, though, so no matter what, some students will dislike him simply because they suck as students and didn't work hard enough to get a good grade.""

Dr. Vernon C. Matzen
CW213
"Dr. Matzen is a wasted talent at this university. He is a brilliant professor, but makes the damaging mistake of thinking he is teaching nothing but Civil/Structural Majors. He has no clue when to let up. His course is supposed to be Statics/Dynamics "light" for NON Civil majors.....But he does not teach it in that vain. I heartily recommend taking this over the summer to avoid his course. My guess is he has tenure and the Department doesnt know of any other way to use him.... what a pathetic testimonial to that Dept."
Spring98 "My grade in the class was D.
In my 14 years of education, I have never had such a pitiful excuse for a teacher. He is most likely the worst professor at NC State. The lectures leave you more confused than when you walk into the class, since he simply cannot communicate ideas. His lectures are boring, in an arrogant tone, and he skips far too many important steps. His quizzes are unfair and take far longer than the twenty minutes that you are given. The homework consists of the most difficult problems pulled from the book. The book itself is poorly written. Although he may know his material and may be an excellent researcher, this does not qualify him to teach. If you must take this class, audit it and take it again during the summer. "

Akhtar Tayebali
CE 313
"He is very willing to help and explain a problem until you understand how to do it correctly. His tests are pretty much like his homework problems which are tough but fair. Has a personality that is easy to get along with and seems to care about his students. An all around good teacher for Solids."
Fall 97 "easy tests, good teacher(solids)"
