"Steve Worth is a very excellent Lecturer. He is
well prepared, professional and quite thourough.
TA's, however, need to lighten up on the point
deductions. They also need to consider that there
is usually more than one way to solve the same
probelm; their preferences are not necessarily
the best.
The book for CSC114, by Jo Perry, is quite
confusing. It is written in a style that is
difficult to understand. The main points are
unclear, vague and terribly unorganized within
each chapter. Trying to read it is a painstaking
process as important concepts are often only
breifly mentioned in passing. "
"I like the fact that he works in the real world.
However, the fact that he has an outside job has
probably caused some of the problems that I have
with the class:
1) We're several weeks behind on the lectures,
2) Our labs aren't in sync with the lectures
3) He's late providing assignments, and
4) He's late providing the answers to the homework
(homework we did to practice for the exams and
didn't get back until the day of the exam!).
Reading his lectures and the exams is a lesson in
parsing the English language. I have to ask myself,
"What does he really mean?" (He needs an editor!).
However, his lecture notes and slides are better
than the book. I find myself referring to a book
I bought myself because its clearer and has better
examples (plus it has exercises and provides the
answers to some of them!). (By the way, the book
is called "How to program C++" by Dietel and
Deitel.)
To be fair, he's not all bad. He's responsive to
questions. He's made time for a pre-exam Q&A and
held sessions to discuss the programming assignments.
The programming assignments are a challenge, but
not so difficult they can't be done. (However, he
probably should tell the class where and when
C++ tutoring or extra help is available.) I would
like more homework (but not from the book). Both
the homework from the book and the programming
assignments could benefit from an editor--they can
be ambiguous."
