Fall97 "Speaks loud and explains everything clearly, makes 311 easier to understand. Programming assignments are fairly and tests are exactly what you learned in class, but he grades hard. A lot better than any other 311 teacher."

Ken Clark
CSC210

"Ken Clark is a funny guy who really knows his stuff. Sometimes he has a little trouble communicating it because he is also easily distracted, and sometimes goes off on tangents and forgets the point he is trying to make. But he has improved as the semester continues. He is always willing to answer questions and is very approachable. His tests seem challenging but not outrageous and he grades fairly. The programming assignments are interesting, but sometimes the specs are a little vague. Overall he is better than a lot of the profs here, and he looks kinda like a hobbit. :-)"

Spring 98 "I Honestyly don't know about his teaching, b/c I never went to class, But his programs are by far the easiest of the CSC 114 classes. However, I would not recommend him to a CSC or CPE major, He doesn't go as in depth as the other teachers on the basics that you will need for 210 Attendance doesn't count, and I thought the test were realitively easy, if you know your stuff -- there were generally at least one nit picky question"

Class : CSC210, I took the class in Fall, 1999. I give this teacher a 2 out of 4, my grade in the class was A+.
"Captain Carl cares a great deal about his students and really wants to teach them. Unfortunately, he doesn't quite know how. He was not very well prepared for his lectures, which frequently included staring at C++ code. I think his day job takes too much of his time to fully prepare. Also, the semester I took his class, he was called away on active duty for several weeks, which had some affect on his performance."

"Good teacher. could be better if he was unemployed and taught. His homework is a tough task. Only 5 homeworks for 50% of final grade. EACH HW IS 10% FINAL GRADE. Very receptive to students and easy on grading. Sometimes questions are tricky and controversial. Homework problem could be solved if class was taught 2 times a week instead of once."

CSC431 "Well, after the complants poured in, I think it is safe to assume this adjunct professor won't be invited to teach here again. But if I'm wrong, you'll be wise to stay away from her. She lectures right out of the book, but the book does a better job teaching the material. Her programs and tests are extremely tough. If you complain, she'll tell you that you aren't studying enough. If you are only taking this course and nothing else, you may have enough free time to get a good grade without a problem. Otherwise you'll be pulling many all-nighters to keep up (or you'll do really bad)."

Fall97 "Doesn't speak clearly, doesn't teach well, and homework is nothing like the material taught in the class. However he only has two tests(20 ques. mult. choice) and no final. Also there are only 4 four programming assignments."

"One of the most reasonable teachers in CSC. He listens very well to his students, and can be very flexible. Isn't a push-over, though. Do the work, and expect a good grade."

Injong Rhee
CSC311

Class : CSC311, I took the class in Spring1999. I give this teacher a 1 out of 4, my grade in the class was B.
Awful. Very disorganized lectures. Actually, the entire course was disorganized - our 1st hw assignment was due AFTER the 1st exam. What's the point of getting feedback on hw if you've already been tested on it???? "Geez. Now I see what I've done wrong. If I had only known this BEFORE the exam, maybe I would have done better.....". This didn't make sense to me. I got a B on the first exam, but dropped the course anyway b/c I felt I wasn't learning a thing. Rhee is TERRIBLE at trying to explain new topics. He's one of those people who turn simple ideas into very confusing ones. It would take him 30 minutes to explain how to get to the closest McDonalds. You could tell that he really knew his stuff, but knowing and teaching are 2 different things. I would strongly recommend another professor for this course.

Woodrow Robbins
CSC495C

"Dr. Robbins sets high expectations for his students. He is also not very generous with A's, so don't expect to get one unless you are at the top of the class and exceed his expectations. Otherwise he's a dedicated teacher. He makes an honset effort at presenting the material clearly and shows enthusiam for the course. He seems to show interest in his students' work on projects. Expect to work hard, you might get mad, but in the end you will look back and say you learned something."

Class : CSC114, I took the class in Spring1999, . I give this teacher a 0 out of 4, my grade in the class was B.
"Dr Scroggs is a terrible teacher. I don't think he knows a lot about C++. All he did in lecture was put the course notes you can buy in the bookstore on the overhead. Then he makes a little side note that anyone could figure out. I wouldn't take this teacher if you really want to learn the stuff. I had to do it all on my own. But I doubt Dr Scroggs will teach this class again anytime soon."

Dr. Venkat Venkataraman
CSC311

Spring98 "My grade in the class was B.
His english can be a little hard to understand at first, but after a while it's not a problem. His lectures were VERY disorganized during the first 3-4 weeks of the semester, but have now improved by several orders of magnitude since he started using overhead slides. The book "Fundamentals of Data Structures in C++" is a complete piece of shit. For one thing, it is supposed to be based on C++, but the original version of the book used Pascal, so some of the code examples use Pascal syntax when it should be C++ (e.g. they use Pascal-style arrays in which you declare the index range A[m..n] instead of C++'s zero-based arrays). It does an extremely poor job of explaining the concepts of time and space complexity analysis, which are two concepts that are used throughout the rest of the book. Plan on using at least one or more other C++ reference books besides this one when you do your programming assignements, or you won't have a chance in hell of figuring out how to implemen! t the ADT's in C++ code.
Overall, I'd say Dr. Venkat is a very knowledgeable person who really makes an effort to ensure that his students understand the material. In addition, he works in the real world as a programmer, so you know what he is telling you isn't just academic fluff. His exams are easy IF AND ONLY IF you attend every lecture, because the exam questions come directly from the lecture material, and you can use your notes during the test. If you don't go to the lectures and take notes, you are dead meat because God knows the textbook does more harm than good. Also, the grades are curved so you have a pretty good chance of doing well."

B. Wieand
CSC333

Class : CSC333, I took the class in Fall 1999. I give this teacher a 4 out of 4, my grade in the class was B+.
"Professor Wieand is probably the best CSC333 instructor available to the department. He takes dry, theoretical concepts and makes them easy to understand. He speaks clearly, has decent handwriting, and is always willing to help when you approach him.

Any professor that can make Finite Automata Theory both comprehensable and interesting deserves my vote. If you have to take CSC333, take him!"
