She is from Chapel Hill...need I say more. A very poor teacher. Got a C in her class and A in all other English classes since then. Avoid her at all costs.

Dr. Harrington-Austin is a wonderful teacher. She is strict with what she wants in a paper but helps you learn to become a better writer. She is very understanding and envolves the class in day-to-day group discussions which keep the class interesting, even the Dr.'s manner of speaking is inspirational."

L O V E the material, H A T E the professor. likes to have in-class essays, which he expects to as good as or better than the ones you have days to work on and turn in later. also VERY anal about attendance; has been known to lock students out of class and then complain about the number of absences they have accumulated. is like being back in high school again, an experience which i am not happy to be repeating, much less paying for. :("

Fall97 "Do not take this woman. She supports only one opinion of literature, hers. She is not open minded to new ideas and penalizes for any idea that she doesn't agree with, in her grading. If you are male, absolutely do not take this woman, in our class, where guys outnumbered girls 4 to 1, 75% of all the girls got at least one A on a paper, only 14% of guys got at least one A. Guys, if you want a C, take this class. She needs to realize that guys know something about literature too."

"Funny, informative, can relate what you're reading to a million and one other books, philosphies, treaties, and ideas. He digresses and wanders quite a bit but it is always informative and he'll usually make you laugh. He appreciates a sharp mind and treats you like you're just as smart as he is. He's a very likable man wiith a razor sharp wit and a brain you really admire."

"If you can write and want an easy A definitely take her. She does not require attendance or any class participation really, and you can do well even if you don't listen in class. She tries real hard to make class interesting and exciting, but she doesn't always succeed, because come on, it's English. Don't take her class at 8:00 in the morning cause it will be too boring. Overall she is very nice and open to questions and comments"

"If you can write an essay then you should do fine in her class. You can turn in your papers a week late an still get a good grade. This class helps you do better on the rest of your other classes because you don't have to worry about English. At least show her some dedication towards working on English and you should do fine in her class. The only grades are four papers and a take home final exam."

I really dreaded taking Technical Writing because I had heard horrible things about the class, but this professor made the class bearable, and I learned a great deal. Ms. Rudd is a *wonderful* professor! She has a background is science, and communicates very well with the science majors in her class. She cuts through the BS and tells you what is important and what you need to know. There are 6 projects in the class, and they closely mimic the process of submitting scientific research for publication. She is always willing to critique a rough draft of the projects before they are due. When you leave her class you are much better prepared to formally present your research. She is just a really great prof, and I highly recommend taking her for ENG 333."

Fall97 "Good: No homework, only two short papers, maybe one quiz, and very interesting reading. Bad: Tests are all essay, she tends to take off just as much (if not more) for style errors (voc.,diction, tone, etc...) as content. Take this class for the subject, not the grade."
Spring 98 "My grade in the class was C.
This teacher is horrible. Of all the material that she covers in class, I believe there was only one test question on it all year long. Class attendance is important, but only so that your grade is not affected. Of course, if you take her you will get a C (about 65% in both of her sections). She grades way too strictly on grammar, in lieu of content (it is a LITERATURE course). Prepare to invest in Cliff's Notes because the material is boring and impossible to understand. "

"I took Mr. Weinberg for both ENG111 and ENG112. If you put in the effort and complete what is expected of you then you will have no problems at all. The most helpfulk advice for this class is; Do NOT procrastinate! Sometimes he takes awhile to get papers back to you for revision. DON'T rush him. He will only get angry so just make an appointment to go over the papers with him in person. In addition to getting papers back faster, I think it may also help your chances to get more papers to "portfolio." BTW his grading scale is awesome. No A on this paper C on that paper. When you write a paper, he gives it back with the corrections that need to be made, you revise it as many times as needed and then only will you get the credit for the paper. If you're in Engineering takes this guy for English!!!."

Finnaly a word about the higher level english teachers: "Just for your informations the higher level professors in the English department that I know only find informative but a pleasure to have are Dr. Hester, Dr. Stein, Dr. Hooker, Dr. Marchi, and Dr. MacKethan, who is a simply a wonderful woman to boot! The professors who are knowledgable but very unlikable, bordering on mean are Dr. Baines and Dr. Katz. The professors who just do a terrible job lecturing and staying on the subject and basically just confuse their students with their scattered teaching style are Dr. Myers and Dr. Holley."
