Fall97- "He's a nice guy, but not a very good teacher. He talks very softly, so if you don't sit in the front, you can't hear anything. Also, he only teaches to the first couple of rows of the classroom. His tests are medium level, usually like the homework, but he gives alot of partial credit. He doesn't know anything about Maple though. Only take this guy if you are an independent learner, i.e., can teach yourself."

"She is awful. She gives huge amounts of homework every night. Her tests are on things never covered in class. She tells the worst jokes. And when we ask her to show us how to do a problem, she can't do it or gets the wrong answer."
Ma108 Fall97 - "She is boggle-brained, she is unsure about what she is teaching, is too involved with her personal graduate studies to be teaching a class. An A is possible if you become friendly, she loves suck-ups, visit her alot and she will give explicit hints of the tests. Be careful during class, she has a tendency to get confused and write misinformation on the board. Also, very important, keep all your work, she forgets to record grades and is very unorganized."

Spring 98 MA 141/241/242/341 "My grade in the class was C.
Burnie Mack is beloved by all IMPECers...I got a C in 141 and 241 so expect to work hard. His tests are really hard. He wrote all the Maple labs so you get no breaks there. He keeps class interesting. I would take him again even with my past grades...JUST FOR GIGGLES!!!"
"Class : MA341, 1999 . I give this teacher a 2 out of 4, my grade in the class was C.
Burniston is a pretty good teacher because he goes through many (mostly clear) examples in class. Anyone who doesn't like maple might do well to avoid him, however. He gives a substantial amount of homework and his tests are difficult."
Class : MA341, I took the class in Spring1999 . I give this teacher a 1 out of 4, my grade in the class was D.
"Do not take Burniston unless you have an IQ of 200. He is very difficult ,especially toward the end of the semester. His final exam was insane. To make matters worse, there won't be too much of a curve because the freakin' honor students in the class will bring the grade average up."

"You would expect a 242 teacher to be able to take an antiderivative...I did. However, Harvey proved that assumption wrong. I must say that he is the worst math teacher I have ever had. He doesn't make out his tests, so they are not representative of the supposed material covered in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!"
"Let me paint a picture for you. Picture sitting in a lecture room of about a hundred people. A short furry man walks in, sets up the overhead, and then proceeds to give a homework quiz over a problem he refused to explain. Then as students drift out the back door, he will begin flipping through overheads which are apparently written in hyrogliphics. He will then assign a couple hundred homework questions to the remaining 25 or so students and then proceed to confuse himself about which door is the exit and which is the closet. If you ask him a question, don't expect an answer until the next day after he has gone to look it up in the solutions manual."
"Prof. Charlton made me cry and I haven't stopped yet. Everything I have learned, I learned reading at night, and not one thing in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU SEEK PENANCE FOR SOME HORRIBLE DEED."

"Excellent teacher, keeps the class interesting, but doesn't give hand outs. His tests are hard, but fair, and he covers all the material equeally so you don't have 3 sections of a chapter on one test, and 5 chapters on the next!"
Fall97 "Expects you to really understand the material. There are no test, just a open book final exam and about 4 projects/homework. He goes fast. Not boring."
Class : MA241, I took the class in Summer1999, . I give this teacher a 4 out of 4, my grade in the class was C-.
Dr. Chu is an excellent teacher. His tests are hard, but he gives you a lot of examples. He encourges his students and is the most caring professor in the Math department. He is very easy to understanded and is very animated. He does grade with a curve. Great teacher!

"Fair grading, will gladly give you an extra day or two if you need it on your Maple or homework. Has a unique way of philosophising the course. Great teacher!"
"Very easy grader and simple problems on test if you can do the homework. His accent, however, is very thick. On several occasions the whole class (100 people) didn't know when to turn in an assingment because we couldn't understand what he said."
Fall97 "His tests are easy, but he doesn't explain the material very well. The notes that he gives hardly ever make sense."
Fall97 "hard to understand what he's saying, but tests are easy"
Spring 1999 . I give this teacher a 2 out of 4, my grade in the class was A-.
"Not the best Math teacher... He won't let you ask questions about assigned homework. Tests vary, first test was graded very easy then the next one was graded completely different. Notes jump around and he spends a lot of time trying to correct errors in his examples. Tells too many irrelevant, incoherent stories."

"He's funny, and he's pretty easy. He gets his point across very well. I have managed to ace the first two tests."
Fall97 "for those people who hate math, don't want to learn anything about diffeq's, must take up to 341, skip often and want an A, takeChung... he's the most pitiful excuse for a teacher known to mankind...his tests would be easy for high school algebra students, and you don't learn a thing..."

Ma401 "Knows the material well, but moves at a break neck speed. Just does examples and does not really explain the material. I had him for summer school, so that might be part of it. However, I doubt very few of my classmates passed. he regularly belittled the class and called us all stupid. It really made me want to go see him at office hour [sarcasm intended]."
ma241H: "In my honors 241 class, we all enjoy his enthusiasm and insight. He inspires me to work hard, and my A, and a real understanding of the topic, are my rewards!"
Fall97 "very intelligent; has an asteroid named after him; VERY mathimatically minded"
Spring99 MA241H, 242H "My grade in the class was A.
Danby is the best math teacher. He's leaving after spring 99, so taht's gonna suck. He does an average job of explaining stuff in class, but tries to keep it interesting. Tests are challenging, but half of each of them is done out of class. Many projects, some which require lots of time. Overall a great teacher."
Spring 99, Ma241H "My grade in the class was A-.
This guy will try to scare off his students at the beginning of the semester. Stick it out though, it gets easier from here. Assigments are long and tests are hard as hell. BUT, tests all have take-home, group portions that make them easy. You can put in as little effort as you want, and come out on top in the end. He will make sure you know the material, will help you out when needed, and will amaze you with all of the mathematics he knows. Overall, a very different class that takes an interesting approach to learning."

Dr. J.C. Dunn
Ma131
"He is boring, a bad teacher, doesn't speak clearly, stands in front of the board so that you can't see what he's written until he is about to erase it. Not a good choice."
Fall97 "Dr. Dunn is not a wise choice, unless you love math. The tests consist of 4-5 problems, each compacting a chapter worth of material in them, it is not hard to find your test picked apart with red ink. If he has a good T. A. you might do alright, but ours could barely speek english, much less speak mathimatically. T.A.'s can make and break classes, so if you do not feel comfortable with your TA(he/she does not speek english) get out, because Dunn isn't going to help at all, he belongs teaching a 400 or 500 level class, not a beginning calc class. You are better off skipping class and learning from the book. "
Spring99 MA305 "My grade in the class was C.
A rather boring instructor. He can take nearly 90 minutes to work some problems and tends to complicate things. HW is your key to understanding the material, since the lecture is more confusing than anything. Most of the lecture (proofs) were not useful and could be ignored. He doesn't go over tests very well either. Good points: he writes everything down on the board and does post homework solutions in the library (the HW is optional)."

"One of the best math teachers here."
"Good teacher and an easy grader. Intersting classes too"
"I have a lot of respect for him as a person, but he was not a good teacher for MA241S fall '95. He didn't explain anything except his interesting family life and his trip to Italy. I found the class interesting, but I didn't learn a thing. I got an A in the class and a 100 on the exam, so he was easy."
"He spends half of his class time talking about his family problems and anything else (but Math). When he finally decides to teach, he covers very little material. As a result, he is always behind all the other classes. He is a major slacker who never comes in with any lesson plans. If you are planning to take him for any Math classes of yours, be prepared to read the book and study on your own because his lectures alone (which are very seldom) will not prepare you for the test. He is a terrible grader who is too lazy to give out partial credit and therefore will carelessly take off full credit. He definitely should not be allowed to teach at any university...."
"Horrible grader. This guy stays so far behind, you can't even gather enough knowledge to complete a freakin' maple assignment. In addition, where Faulkner is fairly intelligent, you can tell that he doesn't really prepare for lectures. The worse thing about him is his grading; he gives little partial credit and subtracts large numbers based on your final answer. This is without a doubt a result of his overwhelming indolence. Although a very nice fellow, Faulkner is probably the worst grader and the laziest professor at this university."
"Faulkner is a very good professor. He doesn't live by some syllabus that he MUST get through by the end of the semester. If you get lost, he will explain it to you until you understand it. He, himself is a hard grader, but if he has Owen as t/a, you are in good shape. He keeps you laughing with funny anecdotes, but still manages to teach you some calculus, too. If you are a die hard math nut, you probably won't like him, but if you want an entertaining guy to shoot a bit of calc at you in hopes that you learn it, FAULKNER IS THE GUY!"
Fall97 "doesn't really teach math, usually whines about his loser son, but curves generously"
Spring 1998 "I think Dr. Faulkner is really cool. I made a good grade in his class and found the work to be not so hard. I like his stories he tells so often, and the fact that the classroom is not so tense as in some others. I never once felt 'stressed' in that class. I'd take another one of his classes, but I don't think he teaches anything else I'd take."
Spring 99 "I give this teacher a 4 out of 4, my grade in the class was A.

Fall97-"This is a great teacher for math majors only. He does a good job of explaining proofs for everything. Unfortunately that is likely to be all you are taught. When a question is asked about a concept, he points to the 3 blackboards full of the proof and states "what don't you possible understand, it's all right there on the blackboard." You learn very quickly never to ask questions in this class. He tests MA241 concepts in MA141.... his philosophy: "If you can do the hardest problem I can possibly think of, then I know you understand the material." ... (not a good idea for an average non-math major). You always have plenty of time to finsh the tests. THE ONLY class I have ever had where the entire class BEGGED for another test to raise their overall average. No grading policy, You'll have no idea how he came up with the score on your test page (ie, marks things wrong you got right, but overlooks things you got wrong, etc.). After suffering the whole semester, it was a relief that his final was very reasonable and quite fair... I guess I learned more than I thought? (Another student who had this teacher said he was okay, but at the 400+ level, he is way too abstract to teach MA141.)"

Spring,1999 . I give this teacher a 1 out of 4, my grade in the class was B+.
"If you take this class, you will probably get a good grade but I can almost guarantee that you will not learn anything about calculus. She lets you take the tests over and over until you get the grade you want (pretty much). You have to buy a book but she never uses it except to assign homework which she neer goes over. And, she's also completely insane. Don't get me wrong, she's not a bad person at heart, but her teaching days are long gone. She freaks out over little things like the chalk breaking... Trust me, I thought I would mind taking the class with her and not learning anything as long as I got a good grade, but I was wrong....you will literally NOT LEARN A THING and she lets you slip right through. If this is the last math class you'll ever have to take, take it with Latch, but if you need the info for further classes, DON'T!"

She really enjoys what she does and she's pretty funny, but she doesn't understand how to make non-math people understand math. In class, she starts off with these immensely hard examples, derives some formulas, and doesn't finish the example so she continues it the next day (which makes it really hard to follow). She assigns and collects a bunch of really hard homework problems every week that take about 3-4 hours to complete. But, the tests are nothing like the homework. "Good at explaining stuff, very receptive to questions, and tells you what you need to know for the tests. However, he teaches a much more difficult course than other professors. He has a bell-curve of the truest sense. On the 1st day, he announces that your final grade is based on how you do with respect to everybody else."
Fall97 Ma405 "Partial credit practically non-existant on tests, and this is with 5 or 6 questions per test. One 6 question (100 point) test had a yes/no question on it with no partial credit for the wrong answer. Made us use the book he wrote (as opposed to the book that other people in the department use for that class) and would make comments on how cleverly written that some parts of the book were. When he asks for a definition on a test, he means the exact definition from the book, and will give practically no credit for anything else."
Fall 1998 Ma405 "I give this teacher a 3 out of 4, my grade in the class was A+.
A decent guy who is down-to-earth. Grade based on 3 tests and the cumulative final, all of which are designed to take the whole time. Assigns homework just about every class, but doesn't collect it. However, it is definitely to your benefit to do it, because all the problems on the tests and the exam come straight from the book or the practice exams. The material starts out very easy and later becomes pretty tough. He does curve grades, test-by-test and at the end of the semester. Overall, people didn't do that well in the class, but as I said, all the problems come straight from HW and practice exams, so if you do all those, you should make a very good grade. The problem is that no one does the homework. This is a class where if you work steadily, maybe about an hour for homework for every hour in class, you should do pretty well. Takes attendance and allows 3 unexcused absences. Is very committed to being a good _teacher_: he treats all questions with respect and answers them fully, and he asks for feedback on his teaching (can be given anonymously). I feel like I learned a lot. "

"He is a great teacher and explains material in a very thorough manner. Tests are exactly on what you learn. No Surprises! Recommended very highly!!!"
"If you expect an easy A, you'll be disappointed. Otherwise, I highly recommend him."
"Very good professor. He goes a little fast in class, needs to slow down a little. (On the tapes in the math center, he goes at a much slower pace.) Tests are representative of the material covered, and always include one problem to make you really think. Overall, I would recommend him."
Fall97 "Norris is a nice guy who teaches an easy to follow class. You know exactly what to expect on each exam, and if you study, there are no surprises. He is hard to ask questions of though, as he makes you feel like you should already know the answer. He has lots of Physics experience. For Diff Eq II he is very deliberate in his teaching method, very methodical. When you take his tests you better know the material although he is very fair."

"DR. Ridgeway, take a seat. In all my years of education, I have not even heard of a teacher as bad as Dr. Peterson. This guy doesn't deserve to be teaching. Not only does he barely talk above a whisper, he is monotonous, incoherent, and trys to teach on a much higher plane than the students are on. Not onl y that, his notes are irrelevant and unclear, he frequently makes errors, has absolutely no control over the class (ie. half the class literaly get up and leave in the middle of the lecture whilst most don't even show, and he will never reconsider a mark. Yet this guys biggest fault is that his tests are almost impossible to decipher, ambiguous and holding very little pertainance to the subject matter. His final even included subjects we hadn't covered yet. I can't emphasize enough how bad this guy is. If you want a decent grade, STAY AWAY FROM PETERSON!!!"

I think Dr. Schecter is an excellent professor. I took both his 242 and 341 classes. Sterotypically he is a nerd. But he is a great math teacher. His tests are representive of the lectures/notes and the homework. He is very good about introducing concepts and then giving lots of examples. At the beginning of every class he answers any questions about the homework. He takes attendance but it is only for his own purposes, it is not factored into the grade. He is a maple fanatic. But he is ever ready and willing to help you with the maple assignments. In the fall '98 semester, he did not grade homework and he made up his own maple assignments instead of using the generic department assignments. Overall if you show up to class, pay attention, and do the homework you are guarenteed at least a B."

Spring99 MA141 "My grade in the class was A-.
He tries to joke around but after a while his jokes become sort of lame and you don't want to hear them anymore. Spends way too much time discussing problems he assigned the night before and very little time actually covering new material. Very boring when he explains stuff. I would not recommend to take him."
"Fall 1998 . I give this teacher a 2 out of 4, my grade in the class was A.
Goes through some difficult material quickly. Assigns a *lot* of homework, though it isn't mandatory that you do it. Homework is only considered if your HW average is better than your lowest test grade, which it then replaces (this may only be the case for MA421, maybe somebody should write and tell if this is true for other classes too). His tests are pretty straightforward and if you work hard they're not tough. Sometimes makes people who ask questions feel stupid for not understanding. At the end of the semester, he curved our final grades a lot, to the point where 2 people in the class of 9 had over a 100 average. Doesn't use the plus/minus system, though that may change if the powers that be notice and force him to. I feel like I really learned a lot in his class. Overall, he's not a bad teacher at all if you're comfortable with math, but if you don't like it, you may want to look somewhere else."

"He is a great/entertaining/intimidating MA 242/341 teacher."
"He _never_ gives any type of partial credit. Never."
"Last semester i had him, and not one person in the class liked him. He was completely insane! To make my point: before the curve at the end of the semester, in a Scholars class, there was not one A and only one B. Is that a good thing? I don't think so. He did curve the grades at the end of the semester fairly significantly, but it was really too late because everyone in the class already felt like scum. I don't know how many people in that class failed more than one test."
"He's a wonderful teacher. He knows what he's talking about and he knows how to teach it. I must admit, though, that I think his grading is a bit unfair. He takes off a lot for simple mistakes."
"Yes he's intimidating, yes he's scary, but he is also very funny and a good teacher. I see the comment where he didn't curve the scholars class...poor scholars..I expected a C/D and got a B. I think he's curves after everyone's gone home for the break. He was less intimidating for DiffEQ's since I knew who he was. Be young, have fun, take Dr. Silber."
"Very knowledgeable but hard as hell! I learned more in his class than I have learned in any other class I've had. He is smart, both mind and attitude wise.....If you want a challenge and a round trip to hell and back, take his class."
"This guy is truly an amazing teacher. But his class is certainly NOT for the faint-of-heart. Our class is always 2-3 chapters ahead of all others. Silber has no problem berating the class for not doing homework or for not knowing things that they (rightfully) should. His knowledge of calculus is astounding and his solutions/explanations are some of the most elegent I have seen. He loves his subject intensely, and I truly believe that he is concerned about the students that want to learn (else he wouldn't be so emotional in class). Don't let his grade distribution report fool you, take this class!"
"Mr. Silber is quite rude, arrogant, and offensive. He does not mind singling out students and embarrassing them in the classroom. Take any option other than his class"
Ma 242 - "DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. FIND ANOTHER SECTION"
ma242 "Anybody who says this man is a good teacher has obviously been taking it up the ass from him WAY too long"
Ma341-"I agree with the earlier descriptions. If you want to learn but don't want to get embarrassed, don't take this class. If you want to learn from somebody who really gives a DAMN, take Silber! Yea, he'll make you look like an idiot, but you will learn more in his math class than in any other at NCSU!"
Ma241s Fall97- "Silber is the biggest jerk on campus. True you will understand the information and his tests are easy, (my A is proof) but class is HELL!! He is constantly picking on the students and takes personal offense to any questions you ask during class. He thinks he should be able to lecture it once and "poof" you understand with no real teaching needed. Take his class if you have thick enough skin, otherwise choose another section."
Ma241 Fall97- "Never, Never, Never take his class. He expects students to magically know all of the class material in one day. Silber has the ability to make any student feel stupid for asking a question. Avoid him if at all possible."
Ma242 Fall97 "I dislike the many bad comments about Dr. Silber. He's an excellent teacher, who will go beyond his way to cover material that isn't on the tests just so you'll understand. I'm making a decent grade in the Scholar's section anyway. As far as this embarrasing thing goes, he just expects you to be able to answer some questions, but sure will help if you have a problem. Pay attention in class and you'll do fine. Once again, an excellent instructor who never "talks to the board" as I've heard about Garoutte. Never take a class because it's just "easy.""
Ma242 Fall98 "My grade in the class was C.
I'd like to make a retraction....I had defended Silber for 241 but after taking the 242 final I have to reconsider. The 242 exam covered only the last few chapters, the hardest part of the book....and he decided not to give *any* partial credit. Tests are harder than other sections, and lecture is not as good as it could have been."
Spring99 ma242 "My grade in the class was B-.
This man is EVIL. I have never had a meaner teacher in my life. He insulted students who asked questions in front of the entire class, and when I had a question, I thought it might be better to go to his office hours and ask it, and he was so mean he made me cry. I'm a transfer student from UNC, and I've already had the class, and understand the material, the credit just didn't transfer. Well somehow this guy managed to turn every concept upside down and use completely different terms from carolina's teachers, and he had no mercy. I dropped his class, and am taking a different teacher this semester, and I'm a MILLION times happier."

Don't think about asking him questions or even answering his questions in class, because he'll just prove you wrong (even if he has to twist what you said around).
